Got the train down from Yorkshire and it was full of mad Geordies on their way to Leicester. Got questioned where we were going and had to make out we had no interest in football! Can remember being held back outside Smethwick Rolfe Street until more West Ham came then given a big escort to the ground, passing a pub and recognising a face off "Hooligan".

I thought we were on top (such an unusual feeling at Anfield, that THAT sticks in the brain!) until the penalty and sending off - three more points for us and three fewer for them would have meant we would have won the League even if all the other results stayed the same.

My memory may be playing tricks on my but I thought it was burned solidly onto my brain! Mind you I'd forgotten Stewart got sent off. That just makes it worse and even less likely to have been a penalty!
Two points less for them and one more for us would've meant being just one point behind going into the Everton game. Would Everton have then tried that hard to beat us if it meant Liverpool winning the title?

The rumour that Chelsea had scored might have been an innocent mistake by someone listening to the radio. When it was 1-0, Speeide had a golden chance to equalise right near the end, and the commentator (not JP) made such a racket pissing his pants that I thought they'd scored for half a minute, until I realised that the divvy little shit had missed the sitter.

Mercenary - I thought it was Ray Stewart.
Ray certainly got sent off for arguing against the penalty

Seem to remember a lot of claret and blue EastEnders t-shirts with the Kray twins on the front being worn on the train. Still think we'd have got a result at Everton if we needed it for the title. 31 years ago...that's quite scary.

I was at that match. Very depressing journey home knowing Liverpool had beaten Chelsea and our title hope were over.
My mate wanted to throw objects at the on coming Liverpool fans in the opposite direction. Glad we held him back as would have been a massive pile up.

Talking of soft penalties, Swindon, how about the one that really cost us the title - for Liverpool against us?
0-0 at Anfield in the 58th minute and Alvin goes up to win a header with Paul Walsh...
Liverpool won 11 of their last 12 games and drew the other to pip us by four points.
We managed to win 11 of our last 14, losing the rest. Oh the pain of the Metgod free kick at Forest and the home defeat v Chelsea!

Blimey Swindon, lighten up a bit. Was a great season going home and away, always confident we'd get a win/draw, while playing good football along the way. And aving a good day out of course! (West Brom was one of many). And being the twelfth man at UP. We'll win it ONE DAY.

I remember being at this game and with that clinical front pair and (and perhaps never quite as much since) we really expected to score freely.

A great season but slightly embarrassing that we still celebrate coming 3rd especially when you compare it against Leicester's achievement.
Watford finished 2nd in the early 80s and Norwich also finished 3rd in the Nineties.
We were always playing catch up and were never in pole position or considered championship contenders until the last few weeks of the season. In some ways the backfill of fixtures helped us because we were building momentum while winning with no pressure on us and the players were just playing matches instead of training sessions which some of them enjoyed.
We seemed to get a lot of soft penalties awarded in our favour in that running.

Yep, our lot ended up in the seats in the side bit (opp the tunnel). The word went round that Chelsea had scored. Everyone going potty then it turned out it was the sweaty daglish. Word was it was a copper who started the rumour off. Cunt. Still, what a season!
